What to do if your child doesn’t like to read?
5 effective tips to help your child develop reading skills
1. 🥕Make the book a pleasant element in the child’s environment.
How:
- Neutral stimulus (book) + significant stimulus (favorite treat / stress ball / favorite relaxing background music, sitting in a blanket with a parent) = pleasant stimulus.
2. 🥕Come up with any strong and meaningful reward for the child that he/she receives after reading.
How:
- Book = a walk with friends / a new coloring book / going to the movies with an older brother (something that is not part of the daily routine).
3. 🥕Choose the “right” book for reading:
How:
Our “right” book:
- Black and white;
- With large letters;
- With large pictures spanning the entire page;
- There are pages with only a few short sentences in the text;
- Quick page turning (a sense of success!).
4. 🥕Create a motivation system with intermediate incentives during the reading process:
How:
- End of the page – time for a little treat.
- We’ll read xx pages, then we’ll play/draw (a favorite game only after reading, also a new one that the child really wants!), etc.
5. 🥕Actively express praise and positive reinforcement during each stage of reading:
How:
- I never thought you would read xx pages!
- You’ve set a new record today!
- Look how well you did today!
5+. 🥕Work daily according to a specific and familiar pattern:
How:
- 10 minutes + 5 minutes of rest = 3 cycles
- Regularity = active skill development!
- Positive emotions = consolidation and automation of the skill!
